Eczema is a non-contagious, inflammatory dry skin condition that is also known as dermatitis. Below we’re exploring what causes eczema and how you can treat it with products and treatments.

What Is Eczema?

Eczema can affect people of any age. It often causes the skin to become incredibly itchy, red, cracked, sore and raw. Some people may experience small patches of dry skin, but for some, it can appear all over the body. It is entirely understandable those who suffer from eczema can often experience periods of sleeplessness, depression, anxiety or other mental health conditions.

The most common form of eczema is known as atopic eczema. It affects 1 in 5 children and 1 in 10 adults in the UK. Atopic eczema can affect any part of the body but can be commonly found on hands, insides of elbows, backs of knees and the face. Eczema is usually a long-term condition but can improve significantly over time.

What Causes Eczema?

Although the exact cause of eczema is not known, it is understood that several factors are important for its development. If you suffer from other atopic conditions such as hay fever or asthma, you are more likely to develop this skin condition. Eczema can also run in families. It can even be triggered by certain things such as stress, particular washing detergents, diet, general health, and the weather.

How Can I Treat My Eczema?

The condition cannot be cured but eczema treatment can help relieve the symptoms you are experiencing. There are some self-care techniques you can use such as reducing scratching (which can be easier said than done, we know!). Scratching can damage the skin further which can cause more eczema to develop. Try to establish what your triggers may be and avoid them as much as possible.

As skin with eczema is dry, daily use of emollients is often recommended. It is possible to prepare your skin for emollient moisturisation by using BYONIK Purity Tonic. The tonic restores the protective acid and skin pH, making it easier for the skin to absorb moisturisation. At Crysallis Skin, we also sell BYONIK Supreme Seal Hyaluronic Acid, which has black oat as an active ingredient which provides deep moisturisation to dry skin.

Here at Crysallis, we are delighted to be able to offer you BYONIK Anti-ageing skin treatment, which not only treats signs of ageing, but delivers moisture under the skin by using the BYONIK laser device.
